ADVICE

I will give my opinions before I read the other replies.

I am in the proccess of conductiing try-outs for a select basketball team. All are welcome and I only call them if they make the team. This is because I do not need the added stress of telling the parents why I did not feel their kid wasn't ready.

BUT, when making calls for the regular travel team I call every kid that does not make and suggest what the player could do to help him make a team the next time.

This is an invaluable experience for kids. To only allow certain kids is cheating others out of the opportunity. I encourage all kids to try-out for as many teams as possible to gain the experience. Also, I tell them to ask the coach what they need to do to make the team next time. It is a good way to get a new perspective on what they need to improve on.

Usually the kid that asks the coach that will go out and practice his butt off and come back next year at the level needed.

My only advice is to not cheat the kids out of the opportunity to learn and grow because that is why the kids are participating.
