A Question-Tournaments/All-Stars, etc.
By: Paul Faubert
I'm getting the impression from reading the posts that most LL All-Star teams just go to the LL districts and then that's it. My son plays in both LL and Babe Ruth leagues and plays tournament ball for both. Up here, after the districts all the local leagues run their own tournaments. Doesn't that happen everywhere? Another thing both leagues do is have an in season All-Star game where each team selects 3 players to represent them. We then play National vs. American league and everyone gets a trophy for being an All-Star. Tournament teams are all together different and we don't have nearly the hassle other places do. Having the house All-Stars gives us the opportunity to name 30 kids an All-Star, not just the 12-15 that LL fields for their tournaments. Thus most, not all but most, of the politics are out of tournament selection and we can field very competitive teams. Most of the politics come in during manager selection and then when he selects his coaches, but that's another post. Do any of you hold house All-Star games? In house #1, the one I put up the link for and am on the board of, we play a minimum of 3 local tournaments plus any Babe Ruth tourneys we get into. If we win Districts, it's 3 local plus districts and states, etc. Tournament players play the 16-20 House games plus about 15-30 tournament games depending on how far they advance or how many they attend. Babe Ruth is much more popular here than LL. I think it's because of the restrictions, so most LL organizations buy extra insurance so they can participate in the local tourneys. The few LL's around also host their own locals of just the LL's. If this is not happening elsewhere, why not?
