Defensive Positioning

To clarify my post, I was referring to the double cut on the full-size field with at least a 300' fence. I agree that on the 60' diamond that there is no need.

For the question on a ball hit to RF, it depends. I may be way off-base on this, but we teach (12-U) that it is a "read" and depends on communication between the 2B and SS as follows:
a) ball hit right to RF, or kept in front: 2Bman covers 2nd, w/ SS in the infield to get cut. Rationale: hard hit ball fielded cleanly by RF, then SS has minimal movement to get in cut position.
b) ball through the RF (butt and elbows): 2B moves out for cut and SS covers 2B. On a larger field, this would be the double cut, w/ SS lined up behind the 2Bman, with 1B trailing the batter-runner to 2nd. JT
