60 yard 'Dash'

By: Bear

Hey RD,

Your guys sounds the new AL league....

This ol' pro scout looks for those that do it all. You know, the 'fab fives'.

1) Oh I like speed,
2) & I like arm strengths,
3) however I love a kid with pop.
4) along with great D
5) and a sweet offense.

Those kids with a minus 1) do need
to hit the ball 400 ft....frequently.
(And they only make $118K to prove it to
start.)

I see a lot of inner city kids with
double plus 1) e.g. 6.6 sec 60's..
but double minus 2). If they can't pop
or swing...it's not workable.

For those kids with double plus 2)
with double minus 1), it's very workable
today & if there is some pop or
offense there, it's iceing on the cake.

I am not aware of a single 'parent'
club that runs 40's. Thus it's all 60's
for baseball. I have seen
a few clubs vary 'start' times with either
a) starting the tick the watch off the hat vs.
b) starting the the watch off first motion.

I have also watched a few sons
for 'mommy and daddy' coaches who
come up lame when times are
to be recorded or 'poles' are expected
during practice.

Another 'real' opportunity for those
'rookies' is .....the 120 yard 'dash'.
Here you can measure 'break' times
at 40 yards, 80 yards and at the finish.

Key on those kids with different
splits at the 80 & finish.

Almost all splits at the 40 will be
their 'lowest'. This is also
a good time to 'film'.

I also try to encourage the two ton
tonies with the following:
a) No one ever stole first base.
b) Learn to become 'great' baserunners
c) All you really have to do is score
from 2b on a basehit with two outs.

What's TRW looking like these days ?

cheers
Bear
