Proper Rundown Assignments

By: Paul Faubert

Good question!! You'll probably get many different responses as people probably all have their own techniques.

Between 1B and 2B, I have SS, 2B cover the 2B side while 1B, P cover the 1B side. I also have the catcher come down and back up 1B, but not get involved in the play except to cover a very errant throw. Some people have the players follow their throws, but I prefer to have the player throw and then circle around to allow the other guy tp make the next play; eg. 1B throws to 2B, circles behind P, 2B throws to P and then circles behind SS, etc.

For plays between 2B and 3B, I have the P back up 3B while the SS an 2B take that side of the play. The catcher will not get involved here, but cover home in case of a possible play there. I will also have 1B back up home when appropriate. LF will move in and back up 3B, but not get involved in the play.

For both situations, I have CF back up 2B, but not get involved. That player is there in case of a really bad throw that the primary players cannot handle. Remember, you always want to make the play at the lowest base when possible. If between 1B and 2B, try and make the play at 1B. That way if the player is safe, he doesn't advance. Hope this helped.
